Punk Girls: taking fetishism out of the subculture
Liz Ham is renowned for her engaging fashion photography, with her images splashed all throughout magazines and advertising campaigns for many years.
But a special passion project sees Ham shining a light on women in punk. Through her photos she gives an extra sense of power to the women who embrace a subculture often considered to be male dominated.
Read what Liz Ham had to say about her collection while speaking with Myf Warhurst and enjoy these amazing photos from her collection.
"[Punk has] always been in my world and in my life. I organically fell into this project just because of people I was meeting and things I was doing."
"I felt that women were unrepresented and misrepresented and, in a contemporary sense, very much fetishised."
"I was very keen to explore the male dominated side of punk and how that then would affect these women and how they would use that domination to perhaps subvert things and empower themselves."
"It's very hard to define punk these days. People get very heated when I say 'I'm doing a book on punk girls, I'd love to photograph you'. They say 'I'm not a punk'. But I say 'Well let's think about your way of life and how you feel about the world' and they go, 'Oh yeah. I am a punk, I guess'."
"How we look doesn't necessarily even matter, it's about our attitude inside. I'm of that belief that it's who you are and not what you wear. But, having said that, I absolutely love the aesthetics of punk. I love a leather jacket, I love studs, I love all that. That's probably what drew me in when I was eight.
"I find there is so much power and so much resilience in these women and these girls. A lot of them have been through some really hectic times and a lot of them are just so happy to be having fun. It's this incredible representation of women in general. It's a great cross-section of society, but it's definitely the stronger women."
