Indie folk superstars return to Australia for the first time in over five years

Fleet Foxes will headline the 2017 instalment of Sydney’s Vivid Live festival, it was announced today, as a part of their first world tour in years.

The band have been on something of a hiatus since wrapping up touring on the back of their Grammy nominated 2011 album Helplessness Blues. Frontman Robin Pecknold went to university and, in a recent Reddit AMA (that’s well worth reading if you’re a fan), mentioned that the time just wasn’t right for new Fleet Foxes material.

“I feel like there was a period from 2012-2016 where it would have been very culturally exhausting to release a "folk" sounding album, considering the climate of Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers etc being so incredibly popular,” he wrote.

“What were we to do? Try and be as popular as them and change the music? Switch genres in reaction to that zeitgeist, which would be sacrificing my tastes just for the purpose of Othering ourselves from them?”

But the time is right now.

While he has given plenty of notice that there would be a reigniting of the band (and even hinted at an Australian tour) this concrete proof that they’re going to be here soon makes it all feel so much more real.

The band rose to significant prominence on the back of their debut, self-titled record in 2008. After it took off, and the band fast became one of indie music’s most adored acts. That love only grew stronger after the release of Helplessness Blues, which has made fans very anxious to see the band return to action.

It will be something of a new-look Fleet Foxes after the departure of Josh Tillman, who has since found earned great acclaim (and a certain amount of notoriety) as Father John Misty.

Their four shows at the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall will be the band’s only Australian dates and fans will need to enrol in a ballot to be in with a chance of scoring tickets.

It follows on from exclusive performances from New Order, Morrissey, Kraftwerk and The Cure in years past.

Expect a full line up announcement for the 2017 event in the next two weeks.
