John Butler tells Double J he wanted to give fans “something that you maybe wouldn't expect”.

With just one standalone single to their name since releasing 2014’s Flesh & Blood album, it’s high time for new music from the John Butler Trio.

“I think everyone in my fan base is kinda hanging for it,” John Butler told Double J’s Zan Rowe this morning. “I don't know if that's too bold to say, but it's been about four years, so people are waiting for new stuff.”

Butler was on the line to premiere his band’s brand new single, ‘Home’, the first single to come from his band's seventh album, also called Home, which will be released on Friday 28 September.

“It's not indicative of the whole album, no,” he said. “It definitely shows different production elements that I've featured throughout the album. It's not like the whole album's like this song. I wanted it to come out first as a little bit of a spritzer, something that you maybe wouldn't expect.”

The most striking thing about the new single is the ultra-modern electronic production elements. Its replete with bassy synths and backed with a hip hop adjacent electronic drum beat.

The inspiration for such a bold new sound came from one of the most exciting young artists in music today.

“The first time I got into that trap production, I was listening to triple j [and] I heard a song called 'I'm Ready' by Anderson.Paak,” Butler said.

“So, for months, when I was working with Jan Skubiszewski on this album, we kept trying to find how to do it and ended up kinda Frankensteining our own version. It's a sound that I've always liked and it features a couple of times on the album.”

Butler wrote the song with fellow Aussie songwriters Katy Steele, Thom Crawford and Martin Brown, and said this creative sidestep is part of his attempt to align the music he loves with the music he makes.

“The music that I make and the music that I listen to are kinda worlds apart at times,” he said. “I listen to Rihanna and Ed Sheeran and Lemonade, that's my jam. Then I pick up a guitar and play folk music. I'm always trying to marry those worlds together, I guess the trap is just one aspect, the bass synth is another.”

John Butler Trio’s new single ‘Home’ is out on Friday 3 August, the album Home will be out Friday 28 September.
