How Snoop Dogg ended up on Kimbra's reinvented 'Top of the World'

Kimbra opens up about having the hip hop heavyweight on a new version of her track.

This morning we received an extra special surprise from New Zealand alt-pop genius Kimbra. A whole new rendition of her excellent song ‘Top Of The World’, which is on her recently released Primal Heart record, came through, with a guest appearance from none other than the OG himself, Snoop Dogg.

“It's so crazy, right?” Kimbra exclaimed to Zan Rowe on the Take 5 this morning. “I still can't believe it. It's definitely the coolest thing that's ever happened to me.

“The first time I heard it I was just screaming. I was like, 'I cannot believe this is happening'.”

He nailed it. He got the theme. He got the idea. It's like, he kind of embodies the character I'm talking about.

Kimbra says it was a pretty simple process pulling it all together. It really just came down to the fact that Snoop loved what Kimbra was putting down.

“Snoop liked the song and managers knew managers, there was some sort of connections, and it really was as simple as that. He was down to put his vibe on it,” she said.

“It was one of those moments where it was like, 'Let's create a moment for this. Let's get a new mix of the song.'

"Christopher Carmouche, who is Big Boi's producer and mixer, gave it another bump, because it's gotta support Snoop now! Bump that bottom end!”

The interest from a hip hop heavyweight can’t have been a complete surprise though. There’s a certain sensibility to the track that lends itself to that style of music.

“That song in particular, when working on it with Skrillex and developing it, it always felt like it kinda had a moment in that [hip hop] world,” Kimbra explained.

“In fact, at one point, we were pitching it to rappers. Vic Mensa had laid down ideas on it, Anderson.Paak... It could have ended up in the hands of a rapper and really worked in that context. But then, as I developed the song, it felt right for my record and I ended up going for it.

“But it's cool to see the full circle. It doesn't get more iconic than Snoop.”

More than merely being excited to have such a monumental figure on her record, Kimbra is genuinely stoked with how well Snoop’s approach to his work on the track fit in with her vision.

“He nailed it,” she said. “He got the theme. He got the idea. It's like, he kind of embodies the character I'm talking about. The full idea of the ascension and the triumph of that character reaching this space of euphoria. I couldn't pick anyone better to do it than him.”

This isn’t the first reimagining of a Primal Heart song we’ve heard. Last month Kimbra teamed up with Dawn for a new and slightly more embellished version of the stripped back ‘Version Of Me’.

And it won’t be the last new collaborative reimagining of a Primal Heart track we hear either.

“I'll be releasing a lot more collaborations, kind of re-envisaging songs from Primal Heart, with other artists that I admire,” Kimbra revealed.

“So, obviously you heard the rework with Snoop Dogg, which is just crazy. There'll be a few more releases like that, where I get other artists to put their spin on things. If an opportunity presents itself and someone likes the track and they have an idea, I love just kind of following that moment.”

Kimbra’s Primal Heart is out now.
