The first line up announcement for WOMADelaide is astonishing.

The first 18 acts for next year’s WOMADelaide have been announced this morning, with some of the planet’s most exciting artist all set to descend on the South Australian capital once again next March.

The first line up is particularly impressive this year, with plenty of our favourite artists from across the planet all in the one announcement.

The Avalanches continue their triumphant return to active duty with a slot at the festival next year. Spellbinding sitar genius Anoushka Shankar returns to the festival to show why she’s so often revered as one of the most gifted artists on the planet.

The Havana Meets Kingston project we’ve been so excited about this year becomes a fully-fledged live party at WOMADelaide. Mista Savona will bring reggae gods Sly & Robbie down under, along with members of the Buena Vista Social Club, Los Van Van, Chucho Valdes and Inna de Yard for a massive 14-piece realisation of his album.

UK producer Adrian Sherwood is a perfect complement, going deeper into dub territory and crossing over into punk, funk and hip hop with his cutting-edge take on the genre.

Spacy psych-jazz master Kamasi Washington returns to Australia following the release of his brilliant new EP Harmony of Difference for some otherworldly live shows.

Malian desert blues legends Tinariwen will make you rethink the power of rhythm and treat you to some of the most astounding guitar playing when they return to the WOMADelaide stage.

Speaking of guitar, wold-beating Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela are one of the biggest names on this year’s bill and, if you haven’t had your mind blown by the sheer power of their virtuosic guitar playing, WOMADelaide could be your chance.

Two of the brightest Australian voices of right now are on the bill as well, with Dan Sultan making an always welcome return and Yirrmal & the Miliyawutj Band also on board, where he will undoubtedly continue to win hearts as he has been doing with such regularity over the past year or so.

Here’s the full first announcement.
