The Shins announce full dates for Australian tour this December
American indie pop mainstays The Shins make their long-awaited return to Australia this December, with three dates confirmed in theatres along the east coast of the country this December.
The band, led by founder James Mercer, will have plenty of great new songs from their excellent fifth album Heartworms in their set, but have so many enduring indie classics to mine from that you can expect plenty of heart-warming singalongs at each of their shows.
When James Mercer was in Australia earlier this year, he told us that he often digs through demo tapes from way back in his youth when he's looking for songs for any new record, which might suggest why he's retained a certain musical aesthetic depsite a revolving door of members in recent years.
“When it comes time to start assembling songs for a record, I’ll go back as far as the mid-‘90s,” he said. “I’ve got old tapes and, once in a while, something will stand out.
"I really just love songwriting. I just write pop songs, I guess. I’m yet to do my Dark Side Of The Moon piece.”
It has been a long time since Australia has had a full Shins tour, with the band last stopping by in 2012 on the back of their Port of Morrow record for a show at Splendour in the Grass and a couple of side-dates.
It’ll be nice to have them around a little bit longer this time around.
The Shins also play shows at the Fairgrounds Festival in Berry and the Fidelity Festival in Perth while they’re in the country.
The full list of dates is as follows. Tickets for the theatre shows are on sale from Friday morning.
Saturday 2 December – Fidelity Festival, Perth
Monday 4 December – Forum Theatre, Melbourne
Tuesday 5 December – QPAC, Brisbane
Friday 8 December – Enmore Theatre, Sydney
