Tom Waits to star in new Coen Brothers film
The legendary poet and musical visionary Tom Waits will appear alongside Liam Neeson, Zoe Kazan and Tim Blake Nelson in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the latest film from directors Joel and Ethan Coen, set for release late this year.
Variety reports that the film, which was initially believed to be a multi-part Netflix series, is a 132-minute feature film that will take on a multi-part, chaptered anthology type of structure. Besides that, there isn’t a whole lot of information about what to expect, but Waits’ involvement is enough to add a new level of excitement for both film and music lovers.
Anyone who has seen Waits in films like Jim Jarmusch’s classic 1986 film Down By Law will be excited to see him return to acting. Like everything Waits excels at, he hasn’t done a whole lot of it lately, which makes us think that perhaps he’s reserving his energy for only the best of projects. We certain hope that’s the case.
Having said that, Waits will also appear in the new Robert Redford film The Old Man & the Gun, which is set for release this September.
Of course, all this film activity probably means there’s even less chance of Waits returning to Australia for the first time in almost 40 years. But that was probably never gonna happen anyway, so it’s no big deal.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs premieres at the Venice Film Festival in August. No word yet on an Australian release date, but it is assumed the film will appear on Netflix alongside the theatrical release required in order for it to be considered for Academy Award nominations.
Earlier this year, the Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou ranked as one of our 50 Most Memoriable Movie Soundtracks.
