You Am I are touring, and they’re playing a full set of Spinal Tap songs
What can you say about You Am I? They’ve been around for almost three decades, they wrote the best Australian song of the 90s, and they’re still up there as one of the best rock’n’roll bands in the country.
And then there is Spinal Tap. The fictional band from Rob Reiner’s seminal 1984 mockumentary are the butt of at least 50 percent of rock’n’roll clichés and jokes levelled at musicians
Now, what happens when you put the two together?
Well, we’ll let the band explain.
“One out of every four and a half interviews has included the question ‘Have you ever had a Spinal Tap moment?’. Well sweet lord, any band worth their talc has, and we, whether on talc or not, have had more ‘Tap moments’ than liquid dinners!
“So, we have thrown down the gauntlet, unto ourselves, under the auspices of Montgomery Glitterbest the Third our perfectly adequate manager: why not have ONE BIG SPINAL TAP moment. And then do it again...
“The sounds and the smells of Tap done by our band (the looks are yours to fuss with).
“We love the songs of Tap, they speak of the mighty, meaty and manky elements of the Majesty Of Rock. Hip hip hooray, and so say all of us. TAP INTO AUSTRALIA!”
So, basically, You Am I are touring, playing a set of Spinal Tap songs. They want you to come and they want you to dress up for the occasion.
It might be amazing, it will probably be hilarious, it will definitely be heaps and heaps of fun.
