Zan Rowe is bringing Take 5 to the stage – with Ice Cube
When it comes to hip hop, the names don’t get much bigger or more significant than Ice Cube.
This month, we’re giving you the opportunity to hear – from the man himself, in the flesh – about the rapper/actor/screenwriter’s remarkable entertainment career.
O’Shea Jackson – that’s the name on his driver’s licence – will be taking five with Zan Rowe, telling stories behind the songs that have had a lasting impact on him.
For over a decade, Take 5, one of triple j and Double J’s most loved radio segments, has seen everyone from Peaches, Beck and Vince Staples to Sir Paul McCartney reveal intimate stories about their lives and careers through a hand-picked collection of songs.
For the first time, this Take 5 will be recorded in front of a live audience. It's happening at the Sydney Opera House's Joan Sutherland Theatre on Monday May 28 as part of Vivid LIVE.
Ice Cube broke new ground alongside Dr Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren as a member of N.W.A., one of the most important hip hop acts of all time.
In 1988, their album Straight Outta Compton basically invented gangster rap.
Songs like ‘F*** Tha Police’ and the title track brought a new level of power and authenticity to rap music, dealing head on with gang life, drugs and the violence of the inner city.
Few other rappers were doing this at the time, and none got the mainstream attention N.W.A did. (Remember how triple j played ‘Express Yourself’, from that album, on repeat for 24 hours in 1990 as a protest against freedom of expression?)
Ice Cube went on to have a successful solo career after leaving N.W.A in 1989.
He then parlayed that into a career in film. He wrote and starred in the 1995 film Friday, and also appeared in Three Kings (alongside George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg) and Higher Learning.
This will be an unmissable event – a chance to hear, in person, from a giant of the music world.
Join us at the Sydney Opera House from 5:30pm on May 28.
Otherwise, listen to Take 5 on Double J or via the Take 5 podcast on the following Friday.
