Jen Cloher is Double J's Australian Artist of the Year for 2017
Some artists become jaded and elitist as they become more experienced. Others rise above, and use what they’ve learnt to make things better for everyone.
Jen Cloher is more than just a singer-songwriter.
She’s a mentor, a small business owner, a champion for quality up and coming artists and a strong voice of reason in a complex industry.
With I Manage My Music, she has assisted dozens of artists in navigating the tricky terrain of making a living as an independent artist in this country.
With Milk! Records, the label she runs with partner Courtney Barnett, Cloher has given us the chance to hear brilliant records from the likes of East Brunswick All Girls Choir, Fraser A Gorman, The Finks and more.
As an advocate for the visibility and success of women in the music industry, she’s a trailblazer. Earlier this year her speech at One Of One’s Women In Music breakfast was a stark reminder of the challenges, but also a foreshadowing of the exciting future, that female artists face in the Australian scene.
It’s this comprehensive approach to artistry that has impressed us most about Jen Cloher.
But let’s not forget she also released a truly brilliant record, her finest yet, which served as part-diary of a crazy few years dealing with life in the shadows of immense fame and part-love letter to this country and the many fine artists who work here.
The record was backed up with a string of shows that so brilliantly showcased her loose but dextrous approach to engaging fans in the live arena.
When you look at all of this, there was simply no way we couldn’t acknowledge Jen Cloher’s services to Australian music in 2017.
