Joan as Police Woman wraps up her month as Artist in Residence with a show all about powerful singers, incredible vocal performances, and the transformative nature of singing.
Joan has been breaking apart the anatomy of the songs and recordings she loves, and in this episode we hear a selection of vocalists that inspire and move her with the way they use the first instrument they were given – their voice. Artists like of Lucinda Williams, Gil Scott-Heron, Ann Peebles, Donny Hathaway and James Blake.
Joan also reflects on becoming a singer herself. She found her voice after experiencing tragedy – the death of her partner Jeff Buckley. Through singing and writing songs of her own she was able to express feelings, emotions and ideas in ways she couldn’t with the violin and other instruments. And in the process Joan Wasser created and became Joan as Police Woman.
