South African producer Okzharp and Die Antwoord collaborator Manthe Ribane release their long-awaited debut album this week, Closer Apart.
After a string of EPs, touching all points on a compass that includes grime, funky, kwaito and gqom, the album expands their palette, fusing such electronics with jazz, classical and gospel. We check out the result on Fat Planet this week - a bright, open and celebratory long-player, ripe for fans of Bjork and FKA Twigs.
Also on this week’s program, we welcome back Congoloese seven-piece Kokoko!, who make music with instruments reclaimed from junk and discarded machinery; and we take in a preview of the new release from Tel Aviv beat producer Rejoicer. There’s also music from Bombino, Chancha Via Circuito, Brazil’s Voodoohop collective and more.
